Strategic pivot for Fire Prevention Works Ltd

AUG 31, 2024 | 5 minutes read

In the month of August, since the hiring of our new Business Development Manager: Matthew Bennett, we have begun taking a critical review of all processes and operations within the business. We took the decision to hire Matthew, as we developed a need to have someone responsible for analysing different aspects of the business in a full time capacity. From day one, Matthew set to work learning more about the business. He had completed 6 months of summer work with us in 2023, in our fire sprinkler servicing department, so had a strong foundation of the businesses values and direction that we wished to go in. Now, we have a published business strategy report, giving us renewed clarity in our operational direction. We are working within the ADKAR change model, and are continuing to see improved results.

Having conducted staff surveys, highlighting areas in need of development, we have now published our refined process maps to our teams, who have started implementing them into our practise. We are confident that this will allow us to streamline our operations, making our turnaround time faster, whilst maintaining a high level of quality. As a result of these changes, our teams have found newfound confidence in their ability to complete projects ahead of schedules, making room for further quality assurance processes and any unforeseen challenges that we may face in the sprinkler system installation industry.

We have also taken a critical comb over our change management strategy, looking to manoeuvre ourselves into a position where we can be more flexible and responsive to ongoing and constant changes within the industry. We hope that with this new focus, we can be faster to meet new client demands and standards- ensuring that we always deliver a comprehensive and relevant service.

Desire for Change

Our organization has always prided itself on effective communication between site and office staff. Recently, we conducted staff surveys to identify areas for potential enhancement. Building on our existing strengths, we've further developed our communicative measures, resulting in even more fluid and informed operations. Team members now have an even clearer understanding of their roles and project changes. Our largest challenge is managing site changes due to ever changing build routes and revisions from other trades. By strengthening communication between site staff and our design team, we are able to work as a better informed team, to collaboratively delivery a service that represents comprehensive designs.

In the dynamic environment of on-site operations, we've long recognized the challenge of integrating various trades. To address this, we've reinforced our practice of real-time communication between site engineers and our design team. This ensures that our already accurate drawings are updated even more promptly, reflecting the latest on-site developments.

These refinements have taken our already strong processes and made them even more robust, ensuring we continue to deliver top-quality service to our clients.

Design team

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve efficiency, we have made significant changes in the design phase of our projects. A key focus has been the redesign of our drawing layouts, with the primary goal of enhancing accessibility for on-site personnel. These revamped layouts now prominently feature information that is most relevant to field workers, streamlining their ability to interpret and implement designs accurately.

This initiative not only improves on-site productivity but also reduces the likelihood of errors stemming from misinterpretation of technical drawings. By prioritizing the needs of our field teams, we're fostering better communication between the design office and construction sites, ultimately leading to smoother project execution.

In parallel with these improvements, we're pleased to announce a milestone in our team's professional development. Our trainee designer, Christopher Ostrom, who already has an HND, is on the verge of completing his specialized course. Upon graduation of this course, Christopher will transition into the role of a fully trained designer. Importantly, his expertise will be fully compliant with the BS 9251:2021 standard, which sets out the requirements for the design, installation, components, water supplies, and backflow protection of fire sprinkler systems in domestic and residential occupancies.

Christopher's upcoming qualification highlights our commitment to maintaining the highest industry standards and staying abreast of the latest regulations in fire safety design. His enhanced skills will further strengthen our team's capability to deliver top tier, compliant designs for our clients.
